Supervisors and Basic Graphics

Above the controller, there is another layer. This is where operators live.

The Hierarchy

A BAS is not a flat system. It has layers, and understanding what lives at each layer is the foundation of every commissioning, troubleshooting, and integration task you will do.

Level 4Enterprise / Cloud

Energy dashboards, reporting, analytics platforms, lease management, FDD tools. This layer aggregates data from multiple buildings or campuses. Operators and facility managers see this layer.

Level 3Supervisor / Head End

A dedicated supervisor: Niagara Supervisor, Trane Ensemble, Metasys ADS, Desigo CC. Runs on a server or appliance with full storage, processing power, and graphics hosting. Aggregates point data from all controllers in the building, manages alarms, runs global sequences. This is where operators spend most of their time.

Level 2Network Controller / Sub-supervisor

A JACE, Johnson Controls NAE, or Trane Tracer SC. Handles a floor or zone, talking upward to the supervisor and downward to field devices. In smaller installs, network controllers can act as the head end by hosting graphics on their own embedded web server, though with less trend storage and slower performance than a dedicated supervisor.

Level 1Field Controller

The DDC controller at each piece of equipment: AHU, VAV, boiler plant. This is where the sequences run. It reads sensors, runs PID loops, and commands actuators without depending on the supervisor being online.

Level 0Field Devices

Sensors, actuators, relays. The physical world. No intelligence, no programming. Just signals.

The critical field insight: field controllers run their sequences autonomously. If the supervisor goes offline, the AHU keeps running, the VAV boxes keep controlling, the boiler plant keeps operating. The supervisor is for monitoring and coordination, not for moment-to-moment control. This is by design.
